Dalton sewer rates double under new Pittsfield deal, with $1,800 bills possible within four years.
Select Board · Meeting of September 18, 2026
Dalton sewer rates double under new Pittsfield deal, with $1,800 bills possible within four years. Town Manager Anderson told the Select Board, sitting as sewer commissioners, that a new intermunicipal agreement replacing a 1973 contract applies a 1.5 multiplier over Pittsfield's treatment costs, the same rate Lenox has paid for eight years. Roughly a third of Dalton's sewer flow is groundwater infiltration, and residents use 139 gallons per person daily, nearly double the state average, prompting a proposed $200,000 infiltration study for the fall Town Meeting.
The board approved the FY27 sewer commitment of $1,777,728.50 and voted unanimously to waive interest and late fees on sewer bills through July 1, 2027. Vice Chair John Boyle said the local fire district "has dragged your feet for 20, 30, maybe 40 years" on installing water meters.
